"Acorns" is the group for 6-10yr olds. The age range is approximate as all is done to suit the individual child. At any one time there will be between 5 and 12 children in the group. Children can attend for Monday and Tuesday together, and/or on Wednesday. MONDAY AND TUESDAY GROUP They meet on Mondays and Tuesdays and follow the school term times. They have 1 1/2 days of being with Emily and 1/2 day of Forest school with Sharona and the other Forest school leaders. |
In the AUTUMN term (Sept - Dec 2012) the overall theme will be "Trees, Woodland Ecosystems, Animals and Hibernation."
Their teacher Emily says "The work I do with the children at Acorns is based around fundamental maths and literacy skills. We focus on different areas of these subjects at different times of the years and the children work at their own individual level within the group. There are also ample opportunities for circle time activities, group discussions, card games, board games, construction toys and free play which provide possibilities for developing emotional literacy within a group setting."
![]() | THE WEDNESDAY GROUP is run by Dyanne who says: "Wednesday is science day which is usually spent outdoors. Science education at Acorns is intended to be experiential and is fundamentally linked to understanding how science is a part of our daily life. Bringing science to life by exploring the natural world is a big part of the children’s weekly experience. The children are encouraged to represent their findings in different ways, for example, a project on plants may include a sculpture of a plant, be it imaginary or one from the kitchen garden. Herb teas and edible combinations from the children’s produce garden are a favourite among the children. "

A parent of 2 boys who attended Acorns for several years says, "I think people attend Acorns for lots of different reasons. For us, I wanted the opportunity for my boys to develop friendships and enjoy being part of a supported group. I think Emily is a very skilled teacher and I felt that the group were really held so the children flourished."
